"Don’t you see? There isn’t anything behind it. There isn’t any reason. All we want is power."

The Dark Forest functions as a hivemind, and has been kept away in a Pandora's Box type of arrangement. First tasked with infiltrating the clans by the Dark Forest and then punished by StarClan for attempting to do so, Kestrelquill was Dark Forest limb who slipped through the cracks and is now a wandering spirit. He hates StarClan, but hates the Dark Forest more. Much to his surprise, Kestrelquill becomes close with the high ranks of MistClan and unwittingly becomes a leader of a gaggle of apprentices who want to set the world straight. Maybe by helping them, Kestrelquill will be able to atone for his wrongdoings on his own terms.
